Pallant House is a Queen Anne townhouse built at the start of the Georgian era in 1713 for a merchant called Henry Peckham and his wife Elizabeth. This tour will explore the architecture, fine and decorative arts, politics and society of the Georgian period, commencing at Pallant House Gallery, where we examine the architecture and panelled interiors of the house, the Georgian furniture, 18th century Bow porcelain and Waterford glass collections and paintings by artists such as Gawen Hamilton, William Hogarth, George Romney and the Smith Brothers of Chichester. After a coffee break, the tour continues with a walking tour of Chichester's Georgian architecture to include the historic Pallants, St John's Chapel, the Assembly Rooms and John Nash's Buttermarket. It concludes in the magnificent Chichester Cathedral where there are fine Georgian memorials including eight monuments by the sculptor John Flaxman RA.
